A couple times a year, you can find stories where a person started somewhere as a security guard earning minimum wage and was quickly promoted to a management position earning a great salary. You’ll also be able to find stories of people who’ve been bodyguards for a client and then promoted to high salary positions in completely different departments. We can look at this in two ways.
First, we can say it’s unfortunate that situations like these are the exception, rather than the norm. Second, we can study the people that do get the promotions and learn what separates them from the majority of folks. Since the second way is more proactive, that’s what we did. We discovered that when resumes and educational backgrounds were equal, the one area that caused the few to get promoted ahead of the majority, was enhanced professionalism.
Seems common sense, but knowing and doing are two different things. So are the results. The benefits of being professional at work include raises, promotions, and the respect from your co-workers. Sometimes it’s difficult to remain professional every hour of the day, we get it. However, it gets easier when you make professionalism a habit. Focus on your own performance (not other co-workers) and you’ll start to see the rewards of your hard work.
